Description
Prolia® is a prescription monoclonal antibody treatment used to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures in individuals with osteoporosis who are at high fracture risk. Each dose contains 60 mg of denosumab, administered as a subcutaneous injection every 6 months by a healthcare professional. Prolia® works by inhibiting RANKL, a key protein involved in bone resorption, helping slow the breakdown of bone and increase bone mineral density over time.
Key Features
-
Effective treatment for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men
-
Helps reduce the incidence of spine, hip, and non-vertebral fractures
-
Convenient twice-yearly administration schedule
-
Improves bone density by reducing bone loss
-
Recommended for patients who do not tolerate or do not respond adequately to other osteoporosis therapies
How It Works
Prolia® targets and blocks RANKL, a signaling molecule required for the formation and activity of osteoclasts — the cells that break down bone tissue. By reducing osteoclast activity, Prolia® helps maintain stronger, healthier bones and lowers fracture risk.
Ideal Candidates
-
Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fractures
-
Men with osteoporosis or treatment-induced bone loss
-
Patients unable to take or benefit from oral bisphosphonates
-
Individuals requiring long-term fracture prevention support
Possible Side Effects & Considerations
-
Mild injection-site reactions, muscle or joint pain may occur
-
Possible increased risk of low calcium levels — monitoring is recommended
-
Rare but serious effects may include atypical femoral fractures or jaw problems (osteonecrosis), especially in dental/orthopedic cases
-
Abrupt discontinuation may lead to rapid bone loss — transitions should be medically managed
